A new year can make you feel like you need to spread your wings and look for a new job. Make sure your online presence works in your favour.

"Employers are being overwhelmed by potential candidates for the few vacancies and the recruitment market is turning to AI [artificial intelligence] to automate the screening process," says Mark Germishuys, the CEO of data science company NGA.

He advises the following:

• Post all your victories across many platforms - for example, if you won an important account for your company, put it out there on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, so the AI bot finds it and it can improve your chances of being hired;

• Clean up the clutter on your social timelines regularly, but don't get rid of too much as this can look like you are hiding something;

• If you want to alert someone to your latest success, tag them so they know how well you are doing. But don't overdo it; and

• If you want to use your social media presence to improve your chances, hold back on the complaints. No industry is perfect, but if it's the one you're with, find ways to show you love it.
