How do you describe yourself?

I am a skilled public relations (PR) professional and entrepreneur and I own a corporate communications agency.

Tell me about Msuku Media Group and what led you to start it?

I founded it in 2016 and it specialises in building public profiles for South African brands through innovative PR and media strategies. With a focus on SMEs, the agency has partnered with clients across various industries, delivering high-quality exposure and strategic communication solutions.

How did you end up doing this?

My journey began with a fascination for the media industry and entrepreneurship. Inspired by Michael Bloomberg’s success with Bloomberg TV, I studied communication at Tshwane University of Technology and Boston Media House to prepare for this dynamic field. Now, as the owner of a communications agency, I embody my vision for the future.

What are your four most important tasks at work each day?

Strategising campaigns; managing client relationships; overseeing team operations; and fostering business growth through networking and innovation.

What do you think makes you good at what you do?

My success stems from a profound understanding of media, cultivated since my youth in Soweto. My journey includes collaborating with industry elites and honing my skills to perfection.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

My passion for media and entrepreneurship started early.  At school, I sold sweets and tried to start the school’s first newsletter, merging my interests in entrepreneurship and media. I have explored every facet of entrepreneurship, especially creative communication for leading South African brands and SMEs.  This unique combination has allowed me to become what I always wanted to be, which is a rare blessing.

What work mistake has taught you a lesson you still draw on?

My realisation that business friendships differ from personal friendships was a valuable lesson. This discernment has helped me to navigate boardrooms effectively and stay focused on my targets.

What do you look for when recruiting people for your team?

I prioritise creativity and adaptability in candidates. These qualities are vital for meeting the diverse needs of clients and driving innovation within my team.

What advice do you have for young people at the start of their careers?

For young individuals embarking on a PR and communications career, I recommend:

  • Build a strong foundation: focus on developing a solid understanding of communication principles, media landscapes, and industry trends. This foundation will serve as the bedrock for your future growth; and
  • Embrace learning and networking: stay curious, continuously seek knowledge, and actively network.
