I lead a group of companies involved in the circular economy (a system where materials never become waste and nature is regenerated).
Tell me about what PFE International does and how its work is environmentally friendly.
PFE International, through Mathe Group, recycles post-consumer truck tyres into rubber crumb, minimising landfill waste and promoting a circular economy with advanced recycling technology. The rubber crumb is then valorised to create a variety of products used in the bitumen asphalt industry, built environment and sporting industry.
What are your main tasks at work each day?
Overseeing operations, developing strategies, managing sustainability projects and co-ordinating with stakeholders.
What do you think makes you good at what you do?
My strategic vision enables me to see the bigger picture and anticipate industry trends, which helps in crafting long-term plans that align with both business goals and sustainability objectives. I have a deep passion for sustainability, which drives my commitment to implementing eco-friendly practices and solutions. My strong leadership skills allow me to inspire and motivate my team, fostering a collaborative environment where innovative ideas can thrive. These qualities combined ensure that I can effectively lead projects that contribute to both environmental and organisational success.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I find immense satisfaction in innovating sustainable solutions that not only improve efficiency but also have a lasting positive effect on the environment. The process of brainstorming, developing and implementing these solutions is intellectually stimulating and rewarding. Witnessing the tangible results of our efforts, such as reduced waste, lower emissions and improved resource management, reinforces my belief in the importance of our work. Moreover, seeing the ripple effect of our initiatives inspiring other organisations and individuals to adopt sustainable practices is incredibly fulfilling.
How did you end up in this job?
My journey to this role began with a solid foundation in engineering, where I developed a strong technical skill set and an analytical mindset. As I progressed in my career, I became increasingly aware of the pressing environmental challenges we face. This awareness, coupled with my personal passion for environmental stewardship, motivated me to seek ways to integrate sustainability into industrial practices. I pursued further education and professional opportunities that aligned with this vision, eventually leading me to a career focused on sustainable industrial practices. This role allows me to leverage my technical background while making a meaningful impact on the environment.
What advice do you have for young people at the start of their careers?
Embrace continuous learning and never stop seeking knowledge, whether through formal education, professional development or self-directed study. Staying adaptable is crucial in today's rapidly changing world; being open to new ideas and flexible in your approach will help you navigate and thrive in your career. Focus on making a positive impact in your field — identify issues you are passionate about and work towards creating solutions that benefit both society and the environment. Building a career around your passions not only brings personal fulfilment but also contributes to the greater good.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
I always wanted to be a scientist because I was fascinated by science as a young child. My dream came true when I studied a PhD at Cambridge University in chemical engineering and also spending time in the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics.
