Career guidance helps you make better career choices.

Too many pupils finish school still unsure what career they’d like to pursue. Early career guidance can ensure that high school pupils are better prepared, reducing unnecessary stress.

“Career guidance allows pupils to be fully informed about their choices, and to make strategic decisions that will broaden their opportunities and set them up for success throughout their academic journey and career,” says Dr Bronwyn Le Ann Batchelor, head of the law faculty at The Independent Institute of Education.

She advises:

  • It is tempting to adopt a wait-and-see approach, but a lack of early career advice can put students at a disadvantage when they are applying to tertiary education;
  • Career guidance involves an assessment that shows students where their skills, interests and strengths lie, and the careers they are best suited for;
  • Knowing where they are headed helps them make decisions that keep them focused and on track;
  • When pupils know what they want to do, they can find out what they need to study and then choose the school subjects that will increase their chances of success; and
  • Without formal career guidance, pupils will know about only the most popular careers or the careers of family and friends. Guidance will expose them to many more.
