What does a work integrated manager do?
My role is to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience. I co-ordinate and oversee the placement of our students into relevant industry settings, where they can apply their theoretical knowledge practically. I have developed hands-on practical opportunities on campus to slowly ease students into real-world situations. I also monitor and support students and employers throughout the placement to ensure mutual benefit.
How did you end up doing the work you do today?
I always had a passion for sports and found myself in leadership roles throughout my life in various forms. I did my first qualification with eta College in 2013 in sports administration and coaching after high school, then explored other industries, primarily in the management field. I found my way back to eta College in 2021 as I wished to reignite my passion for sports. I chose to do the sports management degree and took on the brand-new role of work integrated learning manager.
What do you think makes you good at what you do?
A combination of my passion for student development, my industry connections, my prior experience in and out of the sports industry and my ability to balance structure with flexibility. I have spent a lot of time getting to know the different industries our students enter, and I learn every day as it is always evolving.
I am also very hands-on. I don’t place students and disappear; I check in with them and support them through challenges. I build solid relationships with companies, so they trust our process and are willing to invest in our students' short-term and long-term careers.
What did you want to do when you were a child?
I wanted to be a professional soccer player and boxer. These were my earliest passions in life. Though I am neither of those things, they are still a big part of what I enjoy and am passionate about.
What advice do you have for young people keen to pursue a career in sport?
Stay curious, stay humble, and be willing to start small. The sports industry is incredibly exciting but it’s also competitive and constantly evolving, so the more you’re willing to learn and grow, the further you’ll go. Get involved wherever you can, volunteer at events, start your own sporting event and see how it grows, shadow professionals, coach a school team, or help with admin behind the scenes. Every experience counts, and it teaches you something valuable.
