A cursory glance at TV personality and gossip columnist/journalist Kuli Roberts's Instagram page is enough to convince you of her conviction that sex sells.
That's probably what she had in mind when she wrote Siren, a novel drenched in cheesy sex scenes that follows the exploits of Zinhle, a young woman who "bed-hops from man to powerful man, overcoming cattiness, rivalry, cheating and dodgy agents."
Roberts claims her experiences in the South African entertainment industry
were the inspiration for the book, adding that those who know her will recognise parts of the story.
If there was a prize for the most clichéd and corny sex writing, Siren would certainly be in the running: "The financier took the opportunity to pull up her short dress, pull her panties aside and lick her honey pot" or "Clifton moaning as he'd never moaned before, and when Zinhle reached orgasm her entire body trembled" are just some examples.
In between the sex, though, Roberts deals with current concerns, like young girls in the industry being paid for sex (in this case at what the author calls "Yellowbone parties" - only light-skinned girls need apply).
"I write about things they haven't even spoken about, from ageism to colourism and many other factors," Roberts told IOL.
