It's all well and good to colour inside the lines, as long as children can express a true image of how they see themselves when they are doing so.
Coinciding with the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on May 21, Crayola announced the launch of a new range of crayons — a box of 24 designed to represent more than 40 skin tones from across the world.
To ensure the crayons reflect an inclusive skin palette, Crayola worked with Victor Casale, the former chief chemist and managing director of MAC cosmetics and current CEO of MOB Beauty, who has more than 30 years' experience in creating foundations for all skin colours.
"Growing up, I remember mixing the pink and dark brown crayons to try and make my shade, so I was thrilled when Crayola asked for my help to create the Colors of the World crayons," says Casale.
"I have spent my life trying to create truly global shade palettes because I know what it's like to be with a person who has finally found their exact match. They feel included and recognised, and I am hoping every child who uses these crayons and finds their shade will have that feeling."
The Colors of the World crayons are currently only available in the United States. Erika Merklinger, the public relations manager for Crayola, says they have received media interest from various countries around the globe in support of Colors of the World, which she will be sharing with Crayola’s US and International Marketing Teams.
