The fair is divided into six specialised sections: gallery HUB, gallery LAB, MAX, ETC, AUX and ORG.

Gallery HUB is the central section with contemporary art from across the continent, including work showcased by BKhz, blank, Eclectic Contemporary, Everard Read, First Floor Gallery Harare, Gallery MOMO, Goodman Gallery, Kalashnikovv Gallery, SMAC Gallery, Stevenson, Suburbia Contemporary and WHATIFTHEWORLD.

MAX houses works by artists in gallery HUB with challenging scale.

ETC gives fairgoers the opportunity to engage with master print and publishing houses.

LAB is an incubation to develop emerging galleries and test new ideas to transform the contemporary African art landscape, co-curated by Kim Kandan (fair manager, FNB Art Joburg) and Aida Esi Hayfron-Benjamin (independence curator, Ghana). The aim is to connect West and East African art with the sub-Saharan African region.

ORG is a representation of Johannesburg’s seminal art institutions, museums, universities and private institutions. A range of topics, including magic realism as practice, biennale reflections, the role of arts writing and art’s place in the metaverse.

Open City is a citywide initiative in Johannesburg, until September 19, encouraging residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the city's layered cultural menu. Activating the city with art, music, performance, food and fashion, every day of the week for about 16 days, Open City also gives independent and emerging creatives the opportunity to reach a wider audience.

The Ernest Cole Award: Winner Motlhoki Nono, with The Weight of a Kiss.

The exhibition opens to the public this weekend and runs until September 15. The official opening is on September 9 at 6pm. As part of the Open City programme, running alongside Joburg Art Fair, Nono will conduct a walkabout of her exhibition on September 13 at 11am. The venue is 70 Juta Street, Braamfontein.
