With spring rolling around, Wednesday nights at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market are again warming up as a place “dedicated to food, slow fashion and friends”. Expect yummy eats and a curated fashion offering from local, sustainable fashion brands put together by Twyg.

Studio 42’s Nita Allsop, Gareth Pretorius and Bomber Webb are bringing a whirlwind of Shakespeare to the Swellendam Shack Theatre and Barrydale Karoo Art Hotel, with no time to be bored, but plenty in which to be entertained. Like Keren Banza said in her review of the production: “If you love Shakespeare, you’ll love this show! If you hate Shakespeare, you’ll love this show!”

Laying claim to being “Africa’s premier jazz festival”, the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival is back, with four main stages that will showcase some of the best international and local jazz and musicians, including Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Robert Glasper, Andreas Vollenweider, Ernie Smith, Simphiwe Dana, Herbie Tsoaeli, Zonke, Carlo Mombelli, Ami Faku, Marcus Wyatt, Marumo Femme and the Alexander Beets Quintet. WHAT: Hermanus Whale Festival

Celebrating the return of southern right whales to the waters off the coast of Hermanus, the annual Hermanus Whale Festival attracts between 75,000 and 130,000 visitors each year at the peak of whale-watching season. It includes activities planned around marine protection and environmental conservation themes, marine and nature talks, a treasure hunt, street parade, fun run, classic car show, strongman competition and crafters fair, so there’s something for every kind of nature lover. WHAT: Jazz Meets Hollywood with Jimmy Dludlu and Shashika Mooruth

Musical Collaboration in Cultural Diversity presents Jazz Meets Bollywood, a musical performance described as a “fusion of Afro and mainstream jazz with Durban indo sounds”. Conducted by Rajive Mohan, with performances by singer Shashika Mooruth, Shanjeet Teeluck on sitar, Vishen Kemraj on tablas, Veedhern Puwasi on dholak and plenty of other instruments and performers, enjoy a celebration of heritage and culture.

WHAT: Dullstroom Country Festival
WHERE: Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate, Dullstroom

One does not really need a reason to visit beautiful Dullstroom, but a festival will certainly add flair to a visit. The fourth event of its kind, experience the charm of this Mpumalanga town with a mix of food, craft markets, kids' activities, live entertainment and all sorts of drinks, including tastings from the festival’s wine tent and cocktails on tap.
Tickets cost R125 for children between the ages of three and 12, R195 for teenagers between 13 and 17, and R295 for adults through Quicket.
WHAT: Gotcha’s Geek Gathering
WHERE: Garden on 4th, Linden
WHEN: September 30, 10am til late
The first instalment of Linden’s monthly alternative market is for those “interested in the obscure, the niche, the unusual. For the geek, the obsessed, the comic fan and science fanatic ... and everyone in between.” Planned for every last Saturday of the month, it will offer merchandise, entertainment, food and drinks so the geek and alternative communities don’t have to wait for large-scale annual events like Comic Con to gather, shop and share their interests.
Tickets cost R10 for children and R20 for adults at the door. Alternatively, donations for pets (food, blankets, pillows, toys and so on) will get you in.
