Gearing up for the Golden Globes

The year has been a strong one, with no front runners, spurring extra interest in the Globes announcement

Angelina Jolie, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Zendaya: at 4am on a chilly Los Angeles Monday morning this week the world’s press gathered in the Beverly Hilton Hotel as Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut called out the names of the nominees for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards to be held in Beverly Hills on January 5.

The year has been a strong one, with no front runners, spurring extra interest in the Globes announcement, which is also a bellwether for the Oscar nominations still to come. The roll call turned into a producer’s dream. While serious fare like The Brutalist, Conclave and Nickel Boys made the cut, crowd pleasers like A Complete Unknown (The Bob Dylan biopic) and Dune: Part Two — both starring Timothée Chalamet — will also be duking it out in the Best Motion Picture — Drama category. September 5, a film about an American sports broadcasting crew that finds itself thrust into covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, rounds out the category.

Emilia Perez, starring Selena Gomez (who's also nominated in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy for Only Murders in the Building) and Zoe Saldana, tackles serious topics like gender transitioning, drugs and redemption. Karla Sofia Gascón, nominated from the same film, made history as the first trans woman to be nominated in a lead actress role at the Golden Globes.

Other crowd pleasers are Wicked — set in the Land of Oz before the events of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz — starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande; Deadpool — a superhero film based on Marvel Comics; Hitman — a romantic comedy/crime film produced and directed by Richard Linklater; Shōgun — about a mysterious European ship found marooned in a Japanese fishing village;  and The Diplomat — an American political thriller.

The Best Original Song will bring out the likes of Miley Cyrus for Beautiful That Way from The Last Showgirl, and Robbie Williams for Forbidden Road from A Better Man.

For all the delight her character gave to enamoured audiences, it was shocking that Jennifer Lopez, who delivered a gritty performance in Unstoppable, failed to make the cut. Ditto for Ridley Scott whose Gladiator II is a great extension of the original film.

Fashion fundis will faint at the number of style icons who will appear on the Golden Globe red carpet. In addition to the talents already mentioned, other award season regulars like Nicole Kidman (Babygirl); Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, (The Substance): Kate Blanchett (Disclaimer); Ayo Edebiri (The Bear); Keira Knightley (Black Doves): Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl): and Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door) will add oomph to the already star-studded event. In the male categories, Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Andrew Garfield (Day of the Jackal) and Donald Glover (Mr and Mrs Smith) are likely to delight with non-traditional outfits. Given Timothée Chalamet’s previous cutting edge choices on the red carpet, he'll be sure to offer us something to talk about.

The show will run live on CBS and will be hosted by Golden Globe nominee Nikki Glaser (Best Performance in stand-up Comedy on Television), who is sure to push the envelope with cutting edge jokes of a personal and sexual nature.

Chef Nobu will be on hand to oversee the feast and ensure that the stars will eat well.
