South Africa's queen of gospel is a woman of many talents.

Not content with selling more than 10-million albums worldwide, Rebecca Malope has ventured into designing and dressmaking — and has created a stir with her elaborate evening gowns.

Last weekend she walked the red carpet at the Metro FM Music Awards in an eye-catching dress with intricate beading, a dramatic peplum detail at the waist and fishtail hem adorned with golden-yellow feathers.

“It all started during lockdown,” Malope told the Sunday Times this week. “I was home with just my laptop, some Wi-Fi and a lot of time on my hands. I turned to YouTube and began learning everything I could, from tutorials, watching different creators and techniques. That’s really how I taught myself to sew.

“I’ve always had a deep love for fashion, and during the pandemic the rising cost of clothing became overwhelming. Being under lockdown with no gigs or performances also gave me a lot of time to reflect and get creative. As someone who always needs to look presentable in this industry, I was tired of the financial strain — so I decided to start making my clothes. It was a way to combine passion with practicality.

“I used my grandkids as models to practise on. It was fun, a little chaotic, but such a beautiful learning journey. My background in gospel music has shaped my fashion journey in a powerful way. Just like my music, my designs are rooted in purpose and expression. I’ve always believed that what you wear should reflect who you are and what you stand for. Gospel music taught me to be intentional with my message, and I bring that same mindset into fashion — creating pieces that are bold yet modest.”

Malope has been dazzling fans with her custom-designed gowns at almost every performance since the lockdown lifted. She's also designed pieces for her band.

“For now I design for myself, my children and my band. Still learning. I do everything.”

But she said she dreams of launching her own evening gown clothing line, allowing her fans to share in her unique style.

Malope says balancing her music and fashion hasn't been too difficult because she naturally fits them together. Her music career is her biggest motivator.

“The two go hand in hand, so I never really feel like I'm juggling them; they just flow together. Through my designs, I aim to convey themes of empowerment, confidence, and grace. As a woman, I believe that every woman should feel beautiful and strong in what she wears. My pieces are meant to inspire women to embrace their worth, celebrate their individuality and walk in confidence. My aesthetic is elegant, bold, and soulful.

“I love pieces that make a statement without saying a word — clothing that carries grace, strength, and a sense of purpose. I lean towards clean lines, rich fabrics, and silhouettes that celebrate the body while staying classy and modest. It’s a blend of timeless style with a touch of bold expression.”
