It’s a triple whammy for couch potatoes — a burger delivered to your door by hunky TV presenter Maps Maponyane in his swanky Merc.
After almost losing his acclaimed Buns Out restaurant in Linden, Johannesburg, during the lockdown, Maponyane is delivering takeaways himself, and doing so in style in his Mercedes-Benz CLS.
He’s been delivering burgers to customers as far afield as Soweto, Centurion, Fourways and Hillbrow. Surprise and excitement are the usual reactions when he arrives with a customer’s burger order, he said.
“It’s been quite humbling and great to be able to do it. We’re in a situation where we can’t be overly picky about who wants a burger and where — we’re just grateful that people are supporting, so we’ve been driving as far as people want us to drive,” he said.
All protocol observed, he hands over the burger, and then takes a socially distanced selfie. In February, Buns Out was named by Bloomberg as one of the best burger restaurants in the world. With the business growing faster than Maponyane and his business partner Tom Savage anticipated, the review by award-winning chef Lorna Maseko confirmed to the duo that they were in the right business.
Buns Out is operating at only a ninth of its capacity. Maponyane said the “sad reality” is that deliveries only allow them to pay rent and employ a skeleton staff of three.
“We’re just trying to do all the things that we can,” Maponyane said.
