1. DARK TOURIST

What's it about: Kiwi journalist David Farrier takes you into the macabre and surreal world of dark tourism — the global phenomenon of people who like to travel not to the usual picturesque places punted on the Travel Channel but rather to strange places like nuclear-accident sites, the neighbourhoods ravaged by Colombia's drug wars and voodoo festivals in Benin.

Farrier's mix of black-humoured curiosity and sometimes sheer disbelief helps to make the journey more entertaining than judgmental, and overall the show offers an intriguing window into the other side of the travelling life.

Where to stream it: Netflix

2. BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER

What's it about: US chef David Chang is always on the lookout for out-of-the-way, little-known places in which to eat the best global cuisine. In this four-episode show, he takes his quest for marvellous munchies on the road in the company of some fun-loving and über-cool celebrity friends, such as comedian Seth Rogen and model Chrissy Teigen.

It's like taking a trip with your besties — in relaxing company, telling great stories and, of course, smashing enviably mouthwatering food from Vancouver to Marrakesh and beyond.

Where to stream it: Netflix

3. TRIPPIN WITH SKHUMBA

What's it about: Standup comedian Skhumba Hlophe takes a tour of SA in the company of six of his funniest friends on a journey in search of roots, jokes and answers to the question of what makes us who we are as a country. It's all good fun and gives an entertaining look at the seldom seen but common experiences of many South Africans.

Where to stream it: Showmax

4. TALES BY LIGHT

What's it about: Tracking the stories and lives of wildlife photographers around the world, this show sheds light on the people whose images capture our imaginations in the pages of travel magazines, while also offering plenty of breathtaking shots and the fascinating tales behind what it takes to get that perfect shot.

Where to stream it: Netflix

5. LIFE IN A DAY

What's it about: An oldie but still a marvellous goodie, director Kevin Macdonald's 2010 documentary, made up of YouTube and phone clips from thousands of ordinary people around the globe, covering their daily life over the course of a single day, is, in the age of uncertainty and panic around the coronavirus pandemic, a heart-warming reminder of the things that unite us as humans.
