Southern Sun The Cullinan: no flaws in this Cape Town diamond

The Southern Sun The Cullinan, with its old-world grandeur and attentive staff, is a jewel in Cape Town's crown

It is such a pleasure to arrive in reception and be greeted by friendly, welcoming staff who make you feel immediately at home. At Southern Sun's The Cullinan Hotel there's no formality when you walk into the triple volume lobby flanked by grand columns and huge arch windows — there's a genuine convivial attitude that extends to all the hotel's service. one that persisted throughout my stay.

Many accommodation establishments in Cape Town feature trendy, modern décor, but the grandeur and old-world charm of The Cullinan feels like an oasis in the hustle and bustle of a modern city. Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, it's a peculiar juxtaposition of contemporary and classical.

Upon arrival, I was struck by its formidable façade, exuding the kind of confidence only a storied establishment can muster. Even from a distance the hotel has a presence. You can't miss the classic, cream-coloured exterior topped with a small neoclassic cupola that you can see from some of the busy streets in the area. The hotel stands at the intersection of roads coming off Nelson Mandela Boulevard, gateway to the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

The backstory

Southern Sun The Cullinan is part of the Tsogo Sun Group, which encompasses more than 90 hotels and 14 casinos in South Africa, Africa and the Seychelles. It was opened in the 1990s and extensively refurbished between 2011 and 2013. It's well maintained and feels as good as new.

Why book at Southern Sun The Cullinan?

It's in the perfect position to access Cape Town's City Bowl; in walking distance to Bree Street, where trendy restaurants and bars clamour for attention; and a short drive to Greenpoint, Sea Point and the beaches beyond, all jewels in Cape Town's crown.

The Cullinan staff strike just the right balance between friendly and attentive service and creating space for guests to enjoy their stay in comfort and style. Checking in was as smooth as a South African pinotage, the staff displaying genuine hospitality. Within a few minutes of arriving, we were made to feel like old friends returning — welcome drinks and snacks were offered in the lobby — before we were shown to our rooms.

The rooms

If it's within your budget, stay in a suite. It has its own small entrance hall and guest bathroom, a talking point if you have any visitors, as well as a spacious lounge with a big-screen TV. Many hotels have done away with mini bars, but The Cullinan makes theirs a feature, and in addition to the usual fridge fare, there's a drawer filled with interesting local bottles begging to be tasted: Karoo Prickly Pear Gin, Bains award-winning whisky, Karo Brandy, all in sweet miniature that will tempt you to refill and keep. It's the attention to detail The Cullinan gets right: handwritten welcome notes, complimentary coffee and tea, and an oversized “printer's tray” of pastries and snacks.

The bedroom is through sliding wooden doors that open up to make the room a double space or close to give you cosy privacy. Furnishings are comfortable and elegant: shades of beige and plum with hints of grey are carried through to the large framed mirrors and pictures of beautiful architectural details. The suite's bathroom is huge and features a bath and shower.

Dining

Southern Sun The Cullinan's culinary offerings are extensive. The breakfast buffet is a spread of delectable delights that is a tribute to South Africa's diverse culinary heritage.  The stylish Peach Tree restaurant serves Cape Malay fusion dishes, along with fresh meals served from chef stations.

The Stella Café & Bar offers fresh, al fresco dining around the magnificent pool, like tapas plates including Cape Malay bobotie springrolls or something a little more substantial like traditional lamb cutlets.

Other features to shout out

Whether you're into relaxing or getting sweaty, the hotel has a gorgeous pool area and a wonderful spa and gym overlooking the city. I used my free time to lounge around the outdoor heated pool under the palm trees. It's a great place to enjoy a cocktail and plan the evening's fun.

Bottom line: worth it and why?

It’s got everything you need for a comfortable, luxurious stay in an area that's close to the city's attractions.
