Styli Charalambous, the CEO and co-founder of Daily Maverick, was last night named the winner of the Nat Nakasa Award for courageous journalism for 2021.

This is the 23rd year of the flagship event of the South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef).

The judges said Daily Maverick had become one of the leading online platforms in SA, in part because of the commitment and passion of Charalambous, a former chartered accountant.

The Nat Nakasa Award for community media was given to Nathan Geffen and Raymond Joseph for their work in GroundUp. Since 2018, the small community news agency has published investigations into the National Lotteries Commission that have uncovered corruption and maladministration.

The Stephen Wrottesley Award went to Mahlatse Mahlase, chair of Sanef from 2016 to 2020, "for her passion, professionalism and commitment to Sanef".

The forum also recognised five community radio stations that have shown "determination and bravery": Alex FM, Westside FM 98.9MHz, Mams Radio, Intokozo FM and Kasie FM 97.1.
