IFP founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, 94, is still recovering in hospital, his office said on Saturday.

The traditional prime minister of the Zulu monarch was hospitalised on Monday but is not critically ill.

Buthelezi's spokesperson Liezl van der Merwe told the Sunday Times that the elderly leaders’ family is expected to release a statement this week to update the nation on his condition.

Buthelezi was admitted for routine tests and treatment for prolonged back pain and underwent a small procedure for pain management.

She said it had come to their attention that rumours were circulating regarding Buthelezi’s ill health.

“Though he was discharged, he unfortunately needed to be readmitted for further treatment and recovery. The nation will be kept abreast as and when necessary.

“A request has been made that well-wishers please refrain from visiting, as a speedy recovery depends on rest,” she said.

Several political parties this week wished Buthelezi a speedy recovery.

DA leader John Steenhuisen said: “We wish his royal highness a speedy recovery, and stand in solidarity with his political home, the IFP, and the entire Zulu nation during this period of rest.”

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula also wished the fragile politician well.
