Dear readers,

This week South Africa moved tentatively into the unchartered territory of multiparty government following the ANC’s loss of electoral majority. Our politics team takes readers behind the scenes of the political manoeuvring as the ANC, still the biggest party, reaches out to potential partners for its mooted government of national unity.

The team also unveils the teams picked by the respective parties to conduct what are expected to be extremely tough negotiations. Elsewhere, we have various thought leaders exploring the options and tasks of the envisaged government, covering the economy, foreign policy, education, healthcare and the country’s social support system.

In his usual scathing self, columnist Barney Mthombothi looks at the fate of groups and members who benefited from the ANC’s dominance, now that its power has diminished. He tells why the demise of the ANC’s tripartite alliance will not be lamented.

Lastly, we also bring you news from the sports front, including the T20 World Cup and the French Open.

Happy reading!
