Dear readers,

As the government of national unity (GNU) continues dominating the news front, we report on a conversation this week with one of the most influential politicians at the moment, the DA’s federal chairperson Helen Zille.

n a wide-ranging interview on our Politics Weekly podcast, Zille speaks frankly about the centrality of president Cyril Ramaphosa to the sustainability of the GNU, racism and the DA’s plans for the 2026 local government elections. You can listen to the interview on TimesLIVE.

Still on the political front, we report on the ANC’s reflection of why it lost its electoral majority in the May elections which was captured in a report to its top leadership at the weekend.

Elsewhere, Rise Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi calls for a “third way” in SA politics in the wake of the declining fortunes of the ANC and the rise of “reactionary politics”.

With nearly a month before she takes office, we also shine the spotlight on SA’s first woman chief justice Mandisa Maya. As former head of the Supreme Court of Appeal, she shares the joys and heavy responsibilities that come with being a top judge.

Culturally speaking, we remember Lucky Dube, one of SA’s musical icons, who was killed in a botched hijacking in 2007. He would have been 60 this week.

Sports-wise, we give readers an update on Team SA’s progress at Paris 2024 and the Springboks’ preparations for their opening Test against Australia in Brisbane next weekend.

Happy reading!
