Get the green slime ready. TyLa will be making history once again, as the first African to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards (KCAs).
The international show will be held in Santa Monica, California on June 21. In addition to hosting, the 23 year-old South African singer and fashion icon has been nominated for two KCAs.
Representing Africa, Tyla has been nominated for Favourite Global Music Star. She will be competing for the award against the Stray Kids (Asia); The Kid LAROI (Australia); David Guetta (Europe); Shakira (Latin America); Bruno Mars (North America); and Ed Sheeran (UK).
She is also up for a nod in the Favourite Music Collaboration category, for her collaboration with WizTheMc and Bees & Honey on the song Show Me Love.
The collaboration will be facing some stiff competition in the category against Apt by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars; Call Me When You Break Up by Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco & Gracie Abrams; Die With A Smile from Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars; Luther by Kendrick Lamar and SZA; Please Please Please from Sabrina Carpenter and Dolly Parton; and Slow Motion from Marshmello and the Jonas Brothers.
Leading the pack with four nominations apiece are Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Ariana Grande. Nigerian actor Theo Somolu is nominated in the Favourite Song from a Movie category for his collaboration with Braelyn Rankins, Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr’s I Always Wanted a Brother from the soundtrack to Mufasa: The Lion King.
Monde Twala, senior vice-president and co-GM of Paramount Africa and Lead BET International, praised Tyla on her upcoming host role.
“We are incredibly proud to see Tyla make history as the first African to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Her bold creativity, vibrant energy and unapologetic originality embody the spirit of a new generation of African talent breaking boundaries,” he said in a statement.
The awards, dubbed the “biggest party of the summer”, will feature exciting star-studded collaborations, skateboarding stunts, Nickelodeon’s signature orange blimp trophies — and their signature green slime — throughout the show.
The show will be broadcast on June 25 at 5pm CAT on Nickelodeon, DStv channel 305.
