Stripped of compassion
Thanks to Cape Town mayor Dan Plato, the lexicon of mamparadom acquired a new phrase this week: tactical nakedness.
This was the tone-deaf accusation Plato levelled at Bulelani Qolani, the unclothed man assaulted by Plato’s storm-troopers before they demolished his home.
The mayor repeated the accusation in media interviews, in which he also insisted that, until the investigation into the incident is over, no conclusions should be drawn about what really happened in Khayelitsha on Wednesday.
Another new phrase springs to mind: Platonic hypocrisy. Then on Friday, Plato (who is black) saw fit to tell MPs: “I’ve got a lot of black friends.”
Mamparadan is probably happy to believe his own nonsense, but decent people know the truth: the mayor has no clothes.
