Mampara of the week: Muhammadu Buhari

Blind to a bloodbath

Nigerians have this strange idea that their president, Muhammadu Buhari, does not live in their country. That's because Buhari is often off to England or the US seeking medical treatment.

It turns out that on those rare occasions when he is home, his policemen and soldiers become trigger-happy.

By his own admission, 69 people were killed by them while protesting in Nigeria this week - 12 of them at the Lekki toll plaza on Tuesday.

When Buhari finally addressed the nation, he made no mention of the Lekki killings. "This government will not allow anybody or [any] groups to disrupt the peace of the nation," AP quoted him as saying. But no-one is disrupting the peace, sir, they are demanding an end to police brutality. You would know that if you spent more time at home.
