Mampara of the week: Nicholas Wolpe

Save Liliesleaf and dump this Mampara, writes Hogarth.

The Liliesleaf Farm museum in Rivonia has closed its doors after millions could not be accounted for. The farm was a hideout for the Rivonia Trialists, most of whom were arrested there.

Museum quality

Liliesleaf Farm in Sandton has a special place in South African history. It is where Nelson Mandela and his comrades plotted the overthrow of the apartheid state back in the 1960s.

Post-apartheid, it has been converted into a museum hosting exhibitions that tell of our journey to democracy. The CEO of the Liliesleaf Trust, Nicholas Wolpe, seems to have this bizarre idea that money meant for its upkeep should not be accounted for.

He released a statement on Wednesday declaring that Liliesleaf would close permanently due to the "abject failure" of the department of sport, arts & culture to provide financial support.

It turns out the department did provide financial support, R8.1m of which he is unable to account for. Save Liliesleaf and dump this Mampara.
