South Africa is basking in the glory of sporting excellence, capped this week by the historic victory of our blossoming Proteas team.
In a defining chapter in South African cricketing history, captain Temba Bavuma won acclaim by becoming the first leader of the senior men’s side to lift an International Cricket Council crown. The Proteas' five-wicket victory at Lord’s, the home of cricket, wrestled the World Test Championship mace from holders Australia.
With the many challenges facing us as a country, sport has shown itself to be just the tonic the nation needs. Long may it continue
By passing this ultimate test, the side atoned for the heartbreak suffered in the gutting defeat to India in the men’s T20 World Cup final in Barbados 11 months ago, as well as the Champions Trophy semifinal knockout blow by New Zealand in Lahore in March.
While the road to glory was a team effort, Bavuma deserves special plaudits for serving a huge helping of humbling pie to his doubters, who have put his captaincy under constant scrutiny. He drowned their disapproval through deeds as he and coach Shukri Conrad delivered joy to the nation.
It is a winning feeling engendered by Siya Kolisi and his Springboks with their historic double Rugby World Cup victories.
The Proteas’ success comes hot on the heels of outstanding achievements by our athletes, who are blazing a golden trail on the track, coupled with a resurgent Bafana Bafana, who stand on the cusp of 2026 Fifa World Cup qualification.
With the many challenges facing us as a country, sport has shown itself to be just the tonic the nation needs. Long may it continue.
