This week, Eastern Cape judge president Selby Mbenenge was plumbing the depths trying to extricate himself from sexual harassment charges levelled against him at the judicial conduct tribunal by a judge's secretary in his division.
In trying to defend his behaviour, he first admitted he tried to pursue a “flirtatious” relationship, presumably different from harassment, with the assistant. Then he dropped a cultural clanger about how his Xhosa culture would have influenced his conduct.
So, it turns out the mampara is not only willing to abuse his office of trust, but his culture as well.
