From unorthodox to unemployed
When Malesela Teffo burst onto the national stage as the representative of four of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, he seemed to be a rather unorthodox advocate. But a public hungry for the truth about the killing of the popular Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was willing to cut him some slack.
Moreover, he provided comic relief with courtroom antics which varied from trying to order judge Tshifiwa Maumela to chambers to accusing him of witchcraft. He even accused none other than the country’s president of interfering in the case.
On another occasion he suddenly quit, only to try to return later, claiming it was all done to “confuse the enemy”, which he did not name.
This week the comical turned serious, as Teffo was kicked out of the legal profession.
Turns out that instead of being the champion of justice he pretended to be, the former jester in Maumela’s court has been engaging in malpractice. The Legal Practice Council accused Teffo of serious misconduct, including the misappropriation of clients’ funds.
His demise into Mamparadom is truly well deserved.
