Suspended DA MP Renaldo Gouws awoke to find his political career torpedoed by racist statements he had made in the past, but in his case the past cannot be long enough ago. His “apology” only added to the injury he had caused, especially his advice to those offended to “please drink a Panado for the chest pains”.
He almost sank the dreams of executive glory of his own leader, John Steenhuisen, who said Gouws was just being ''young and irresponsible”. Which reminds one of former US president Donald Trump's comments in 2017 about white supremacists, of whom he said there were “very fine people on both sides”.
Mampara Gouws now faces equality court prosecution, which may spare us hearing in parliament how he would sugar-coat his racist sensibilities into the subtler racism the DA is so often accused of expounding.
