Like most narcissistic bigots, Howard Feldman sees himself as a renegade — a writer who stirs things up and “skirts the edges of conformity”.
The South African blogger and newly axed columnist glorifies his offensive hate speech as “funny and edgy”, “provocative and outrageous”. He's the kind of guy who makes hilarious comments like “If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you”.
How cute. Except he's not.
Howie's flippant comments on social media this week about the pager attack in Lebanon — including describing it as “outrageous and very cool (unless you owned a pager)” expose his desperate need for attention. Perhaps his mother didn't play with him enough when he was a boy.
South Africans are free to hold whatever view they want on the war in Gaza. But trying to score “shock jock” cheap points in a devastating situation that has ruined so many lives makes this wannabe a card-carrying mampara.
