SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila has made no secret of his animus towards the government of national unity, accusing the party to which his comrades have hitched their wagon of “selling out”.

He’s been accused of proclaiming that “any black party that is led by black people is progressive”.

This week, Mapaila went a step further, departing from a tradition of class analysis to declare: “Now we are being governed by the whites... They are the ones who control what must happen.” Which is to be expected from the firebrand, but will SACP ministers now quit their cushy GNU jobs rather than serve alongside whites? Don’t hold your breath.

Given the SACP’s historic refusal to contest elections on its own, it will be interesting to see how this mampara intends to campaign for the ANC ahead of local government elections in 2026.
