Parliament is again tasked with selecting new members for the National Youth Development Agency — that government agency known for organising kissing festivals and spending millions on balloons. The guy tipped to be handed the key to the vault is ANC Youth League treasurer-general Zwelo Masilela.
In an attempt to block Masilela from ascending to the position, EFF MPs exposed Masilela as a serial cadre deployee who has occupied the position of senior researcher at a Mpumalanga municipality without any post-matric qualification. But Masilela defended himself, telling parliamentarians that it was the municipality’s fault that he ended up in a position he wasn’t qualified for.
“I did not apply for the post of senior researcher ... I applied to be a PA ... Because I was placed in a political office, they just placed me as a senior researcher. I couldn’t say no, I don’t qualify. I spent two years without being given proper functions in that responsibility. It wasn’t my problem, it was the problem of the municipality.”
