Mampara of the week: Willies Mchunu

Fools of a feather

MK Party convener Willies Mchunu this week took a page out of his leader's misogynistic book when he referred to former public protector Thuli Madonsela as itshitshi, an isiZulu term used to describe a young virgin.

Doubling down on his statement when called out by a journalist, Mchunu said he used the term as a show of respect.

“There was a time when she was a virgin, and therefore I still respect that virginity even when she is now old. It wasn't anything about the name, but the main thing was [that] she found Zuma to have had some relations with the Guptas through state capture,” said the former premier of KwaZulu-Natal.

It boggles Old Hog's mind that a seasoned political leader in 2025, when women are under patriarchal attack, could use such a term in reference to an adult woman.

In this case, could Mchunumpara, rescued from political oblivion by MK, now be praise-singing for his supper? Or is it simply a question of birds of a feather?
