Mampara of the week: Enoch Godongwana

VAT’s the matter with SA’s finance minister?

The recent actions of finance minister Enoch Godongwana have left many citizens of the country scratching their heads. First he said he’d increase VAT by two percentage points — to howls of protests from most political parties. Then he changed his mind, reducing it to 0.5%.

This week, after much gnashing of teeth in the country, Godongwana suddenly changed tack again, telling us in a night-time announcement he’d ditched the idea of a VAT hike after all. Reluctantly, we have to give this week’s Mampara honours to the FM with many hats, in the hope it’s the last time he puts the whole nation through the wringer. As if we don’t have enough to worry about already. Whew!
