Company credit cards are an essential team-building tool in any successful business. You never know when your colleagues might want some KFC or Nando’s. Or a beer at the local tavern. Or even a quick shopping spree at Foschini. After all, a happy employee is a productive employee. In the case of Athletics SA, its president James Moloi must surely have been the happiest of all if his long list of expenses is anything to go by.
But now the hangover has set in, with parliament’s sport, arts & culture portfolio committee calling for a forensic investigation into his credit card spending since 2021. Moloi is accused of using his card at taverns, liquor stores and other retail outlets — but insists he used the card for business-related expenses.
Sports minister Gayton McKenzie is not convinced: “Who has a meeting in a tavern? The music is so loud. How do we hear each other? People are dancing.”
For his inability to keep his wallet in his pants, Moloi is this week’s mampara.
