Suspended Independent Development Trust (IDT) CEO Tebogo Malaka gave new meaning to the expression “brown envelope” this week when she was exposed apparently trying to bribe a top investigative journalist with wads of cash in a glossy white Dior bag.
In a recorded sting, Malaka and her spokesperson Phasha Makgolane were shown trying to persuade Daily Maverick’s Pieter-Louis Myburgh to not publish a story about her alleged corrupt shenanigans at the IDT.
Their hare-brained action could land them in prison after public works minister Dean Macpherson this week laid criminal charges against Malaka.
Without shame, Malaka even tried to tug at Myburgh's heart strings by pleading that her relatives would be negatively affected by his exposé.
And so, over and above her possible residency in a correctional services facility, Mamparalaka is now likely to be remembered not for building schools and other public amenities, which is the job of the IDT, but for engaging in some extremely shady extramural activities.
