Gen Rudzani “Foot-in-Mouth” Maphwanya marched straight into the line of fire during his visit to Iran this week.
The defence force boss told a bevy of Iranian military bigwigs that South Africa and Iran shared “common goals”, adding: “We always stand alongside the oppressed and defenceless people of the world.” Awkward much, given our current strained relations with the US, which regards Iran as a steadfast supporter of global terrorism?
Joining him on the mampara podium was his boss, defence minister Angie Motshegka, who was initially unimpressed with her errant underling’s behaviour, but later declared he had “done nothing wrong”.
For her flop-flopping debacle, Motshegka should put on her camo fatigues and disappear into the background. But it is Maphwanya’s ill-advised smooching that wins him this week’s mampara medal of dishonour.
