Watching SABC presenter Juliet Newell interrogate Dr Mamphela Ramphele about Gaza this week was not unlike watching a car accident in slow motion: you knew it was going to end badly but there was nothing you could do to stop it.
Newell has been “unscheduled” by the public broadcaster after the disastrous interview, in which she aggressively accused Ramphele of being “provocative” by comparing the war on Gaza to the holocaust.
By the time the final bell rang, Ramphele had emerged as the victor, with Newell trying to save face by muttering “let’s agree to disagree”.
While it is a journalist’s role to ask hard questions, Newell’s attack was combative, overly personal and completely unprofessional, earning her this week’s title of Mampara of the Week.
