President Cyril Ramaphosa has lost the “ethical candidate” tag just weeks ahead of the ANC elective conference, taking place later this month at Nasrec.

This past week reports emerged that Ramaphosa was expected to resign amid damning findings made by the section 89 panel of experts that he may have committed a serious violation of the law and serious misconduct in terms of the constitution.

This related to his failure to report a burglary at his Phala Phala farm two years ago and to undertaking paid work while a member of the cabinet.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has since said: “It’s not about whether he is panicking, that I can assure you. It’s not about the fact that he lacks confidence in his own caucus.”

Magwenya said Ramaphosa was looking at a number of options and, in the process, consulting with a number of role players.

The panel was headed by retired chief justice Sandile Ngcobo and handed over the damning report to National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula on Wednesday.
