ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula's attempts to breathe life back into the party's youth league might be a little too late.
On Saturday, Mbalula took the stage at the ANCYL conference to assert his authority and send a strong message to those who accused him of manipulating the event in favour of his preferred candidate.
Mbalula has been accused of meddling in the affairs of the structure, among other things by axing its task team convener Xola Nqola on the eve of the conference. Delegates made their feelings clear when Mbalula took to the podium, singing “wenzen' uXola” (what did Xola do?).
Last week he read the riot act to the national task team, admonishing them for hosting an “unauthorised and “patently irregular” Eastern Cape electoral conference.
Some task team members of the ANCYL have been warning about the danger (or futility) of interference by senior party leaders in the league's electoral affairs.
