Legendary political and legal figures Nelson Mandela, Arthur Chaskalson, George Bizos and Kader Asmal “salute the next generation” of lawyers and politicians heading up “Team SA” in the country’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
South Africa has accused Israel of crimes against humanity in its war against Hamas in Gaza and wants the ICJ to order a ceasefire.
The country also wants the court to make a provisional order that Israel stop expelling Palestinians from their homes, depriving them of food and water, and preventing them from accessing humanitarian assistance and medical supplies.
It said Israel’s aerial and ground offensive — which has laid waste to much of the narrow coastal enclave and killed more than 23,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities — aimed to bring about “the destruction of the population” there.
Israel launched its all-out war in Gaza after a cross-border rampage on October 7 by Hamas militants in which about 1,200 Israeli citizens were killed and more than 240 taken hostage.
