With days to the election, the ANC’s approval rating is strengthening as party veterans join President Cyril Ramaphosa on the campaign trail in an intensified drive to win votes.
Research released earlier this week suggests 77% of South Africans who still trust Ramaphosa are most likely to vote for the ANC. Polls done by both Ipsos and the Social Research Foundation similarly show there has been an uptick in support for the ANC in recent weeks.
The improvement may at least in part be ascribed to Ramaphosa last week signing the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill into law, five years after it was first tabled in parliament. The bill is aimed at ushering in a universal healthcare coverage where everyone has equal access to quality and affordable healthcare.
The DA is among those opposed to the NHI, with its leader John Steenhuisen describing it as an introduction of a crisis that Ramaphosa is using as an electioneering tool just days before the polls. He claims Ramaphosa signed the bill into law as a last stand after realising that the ANC was haemorrhaging support.
