The government of national unity (GNU) has emerged triumphant over “distant runner-up” Julius Malema's EFF and “boycotter” Jacob Zuma's MK Party.
On Friday, president Cyril Ramaphosa retained his position as SA’s number one citizen, with the help of the DA and IFP among others.
He was elected with the support of 283 MPs, beating Malema who received 44 votes.
ANC and DA MPs gave Ramaphosa a standing ovation shortly after chief justice Raymond Zondo announced him as the duly elected president.
On Thursday, the IFP's Thami Ntuli was elected KwaZulu-Natal premier by a coalition of the IFP, ANC, DA and NFP to lead the government in the province. He beat the MK Party's Phathisiswe Chiliza, who was supported by the EFF, by 41 votes to 39.
The MK Party, which received the most votes in KwaZulu-Natal in the recent elections, giving it 37 seats in the provincial legislature, was unable to form a coalition. Its only partner became the EFF with just two seats, which was insufficient to form a provincial government.
