President Cyril Ramaphosa last month appointed Mandisa Maya to take over the top judicial seat effective from September 1 as her predecessor Raymond Zondo's term expires on August 31.
The newly appointed chief justice will have to take over several unresolved pressing issues from Zondo, according to legal experts.
These include “burning” issues such as the independent administration of the judiciary, following up on the state capture inquiry findings and implementing the sexual harassment policy, which are still on the desk of Zondo and are unlikely to be resolved in his remaining weeks.
On state capture, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has already launched a disciplinary process against three senior party leaders implicated in Zondo's report: Malusi Gigaba, David Mahlobo and Cedric Frolick.
ANC Veterans League president Snuki Zikalala told the Sunday Times this week that Mbalula informed veterans that he has written to the party’s integrity commission asking it to resume disciplinary processes against Gigaba, a former minister of finance, public enterprises and home affairs; Mahlobo, current deputy minister of water & sanitation and a former minister of state security; and Frolick, who is chair of the house committee in the National Assembly.
