Bavuma's Proteas put South Africa on top of the world

(BRANDAN REYNOLDS)

South Africa is basking in the glory of sporting excellence, capped this week by the historic victory of our blossoming Proteas team.

In a defining chapter in South African cricketing history, captain Temba Bavuma won acclaim by becoming the first leader of the senior men’s side to lift an International Cricket Council crown. The Proteas' five-wicket victory at Lord’s, the home of cricket, wrestled the World Test Championship mace from holders Australia.

While the road to glory was a team effort, Bavuma deserves special plaudits for serving a huge helping of humbling pie to his doubters, who have put his captaincy under constant scrutiny. He drowned their disapproval through deeds as he and coach Shukri Conrad delivered joy to the nation.

With the many challenges facing us as a country, sport has shown itself to be just the tonic the nation needs. Long may it continue.
