Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager Ange Postecoglou celebrated his first home game in charge with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United last night — thanks to Pape Matar Sarr’s maiden Premier League goal and a late own goal by Lisandro Martinez.

Senegalese Sarr seized on a deflected cross in the 49th minute to shoot high into the net past Andre Onana, and Martinez then sealed his side’s fate by deflecting Ben Davies’ scuffed effort past his own keeper in the 83rd minute.

Both sides were denied by the woodwork in a free-flowing contest and United’s Bruno Fernandes wasted a glorious opportunity but Tottenham deserved the three points for a vibrant second-half display.

Despite the sale of talisman and club record scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich on the eve of the new season, Tottenham have started the campaign positively with four points from their opening two games. United have three points.

A day after Kane opened his Bundesliga account for Bayern, his old club showed there is life after the player who scored 280 goals in 435 appearances without winning a trophy. Tottenham have scored four goals in their opening two games with defenders scoring in the 2-2 draw at Brentford and yesterday’s goals again coming from unlikely sources.

In an earlier game, Liverpool fought back to claim a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth , with manager Jürgen Klopp praising his side’s poise under pressure after they conceded the first goal at Anfield.

Liverpool were caught napping in the opening five minutes, as Bournemouth had a goal disallowed for offside before taking the lead through Antoine Semenyo in the third minute. However, the hosts did well to overcome their stutter, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota sealing the points after Luis Diaz had cancelled out Semenyo’s strike. “Horrible start to the game,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“We needed a few minutes to shake it off, and then we were really good. The second half it changed completely because all of a sudden we were 10 men but scored the third goal, which is very important in this moment."

Liverpool’s win came at a price, with Alexis Mac Allister being shown a red card for a high tackle in the 58th minute, meaning the Argentine midfielder will serve a three-match ban.

Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo fired Brentford to a 3-0 win at Fulham in the Premier League with the hosts reduced to 10 men from the 64th minute when captain Tim Ream was sent off after giving away a penalty.

The lively Wissa put the Bees ahead in the 44th minute of their West London derby with a right-footed shot into a gaping goal after centre-back Issa Diop was caught napping while attempting a pass to goalkeeper Bernd Leno. He made it 2-0 from the spot in the 66th, slotting clinically in off the left post with Leno barely moving, after Ream was ruled to have felled Wissa and collected a red card for his second yellow.

Mbeumo then scored the third with a simple tap-in, assisted by Kristoffer Ajer, two minutes into time added amid booing and with the unhappy home fans heading for the exits at Craven Cottage.

Other results: Fulham 0-3 Brentford; Wolverhampton 1-4 Brighton.
