Good leaders can be the difference between a successful business and one that limps towards failure.

“South Africa doesn’t need more bosses,” says Kevin Dixon, chief growth officer at The Unlimited, a financial services, insurance and rewards company. “It needs more leaders. There’s a big difference between telling people what to do and helping them discover what they’re capable of. One creates followers. The other creates people who can go on to lead.” Dixon advises:

  • Start with yourself; develop self-awareness and take responsibility for your attitude, decisions, behaviour and reactions;
  • Stop confusing providing support with being indispensable; you cannot develop leaders if you solve all their problems. Let people learn and grow and, crucially, make mistakes;
  • Don’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty — you need to be willing and able to do the hard work alongside your team, not watch from the safety of the sidelines; and
  • Measure your own success as a leader by the quality of leaders you help to grow and not by how many people report to you.
