Former Moja Love presenter Julius Moloi, popularly known as Bishop Moloi, has been evicted from a rental property after allegedly accumulating R40,000 unpaid rent in Klerksdorp.
The North West Rental Housing Tribunal ruled in May that Moloi was liable for R31,000 in outstanding rent after allegedly going months without paying the monthly rental of R7,000 to his landlord, Christine Herbst.
He was evicted from the property in July, leaving behind a substantial debt including an unpaid municipal account.
The Sunday Times understands that the property, situated in Meiringspark, Klerksdorp, is next to Moloi’s house, which he had converted into a school that has since closed.
Moloi, a former presenter of the Amabishop and Child Manyonyoba television shows, did not respond to the Sunday Times’ requests for comment this week.
After ignoring text messages, he answered his phone on Thursday afternoon but said he was driving and unable to speak. Later that day, his phone rang unanswered, and he did not respond to subsequent text messages or WhatsApp messages.
The Sunday Times has seen a tribunal ruling dated May 26 and a settlement agreement between Moloi and Herbst, dated July 20, reflecting an outstanding debt of R38,987.
Under the agreement, Moloi committed to paying R2,000 a week towards the debt. However, the Sunday Times understands that he has made only one payment under the arrangement.
Moloi also allegedly left behind an outstanding municipal bill of about R21,000, adding to the amount owed.
According to information obtained by the Sunday Times, Moloi made a single payment of R18,000 in February after moving into the property in November last year.
A warrant of execution against his property, seeking to recover R41,173, was granted on July 6.
ERA Estate, the agency that arranged the rental, was attempting to attach Moloi’s assets to recover the outstanding amount.
Herbst declined to comment but confirmed that the situation had caused her financial difficulties, forcing her to find ways to keep up with her bond repayments.
Moloi previously made headlines in June 2023 after allegations emerged that he had defrauded a man of R150,000 in connection with the purported sale of an RDP house.
The allegations were that Moloi had offered the house for sale despite allegedly not having the necessary ownership documents.
The prospective buyer reportedly demanded his money back, after which Moloi made arrangements to repay the amount in monthly instalments, City Press and TimesLIVE reported at the time.
