When it comes to soccer-meets-fashion, no other player has held a candle to David Beckham. However, as an underrated style star, Mzansi’s very own Linda Mntambo has proven to be a master of swag.

With spring in full swing and the summer season around the corner, we look at some of his best outfits for inspiration on how to put your best cleats forward.

Collegiate

Clockwise: 1. Tommy Hilfiger glasses, SmartBuyGlasses, R1,099. 2. Unisex pink check tie, The Fix, R109. 3. Urban Groove city backpack, American Tourister, R999 4. Ricardo trousers, Mango, R1,899. Picture: Instagram/@LindaMntambo

A key element to building a closet like Mntambo’s is the preppy approach he takes. Throughout his looks there are elements of kofifi influences, with vintage flat caps and a vibrant vintage colour palette.

Give neutral shirts, shoes and trousers a splash of colour through accessories such as backpacks, glasses or neckties.

Short ’n sweet

Clockwise: 1. Classic fez, Simon & Mary, R900. 2. Oversized fit t-shirt — grey marl, H&M, R239. 3. Originals woven short, Adidas, R 1,399. 4. Adidas Originals Tokyo Shoes, Adidas, R1,500. Picture: Instagram/@LindaMntambo

If you don’t like the trendy kilts and bermuda shorts, you are going to have a hard time adjusting to this part of the soccer star’s limitless style. The appeal of this look is that it can accommodate any changes in your day. It can go formal with the addition of a blazer, yacht-ready with sandals or boat shoes, and even sunset drinks with a scarf and retro sunglasses. Just have fun.

Co-ord king

Clockwise: 1. Ruald Rheeder men's brown printed shirt, YDE, R460. 2. Marlon Green Croc Belly, Daniel Wellington, R3,690. 3. Ruald Rheeder men's brown printed pants, YDE, R460. 4. Markham Men's dark emerald crystal gold signet ring, Markham, R79. Picture: Instagram/@LindaMntambo

Matchy-matchy? Not necessarily. There is a playfulness to Mntambo’s style lingo, and co-ords are some of the best ways for him to embrace bold colours or striking prints. It’s also one of the best ways you can take notes on bold accessory choices, which he uses to finish a look. Other than his staple hats or glasses, look to complementary watches or rings to spice up an ensemble. Keep the silhouette relaxed, as these pieces often move between work and play.

On trend

1. Three-stripe polo shirt, Adidas, R 479. 2. Slim-fit cotton chinos — dark blue H&M, R379. 3. Zuri Nzuri Bese Saka silk-feel scarf, Amazon, R380. 4. DK614037-3 — blue, Daniel Klein, R1,014. Picture: Instagram/@LindaMntambo

Mntambo always has a finger on the pulse of menswear trends — and when he doesn’t, he’s already at the forefront of those starting to take over. Among these is a focus on the men’s waist. Whether you go for high-waisted trousers or cinched jackets, have fun with scarves as belts or layered pieces that bring attention to your silhoutte — regardless of your shape. It’s an inclusive approach to style and anyone can have fun with it.
